Champions League Twenty20 History, Champions League Twenty20 2009 Expanded

Twenty20 Champions League is an international Twenty20 cricket war between clubs from India, Australia, England, South Africa, Sri Lanka, New Zealand and West Indies. Twenty20 Champions League is chair by Lalit Modi, who is the Chairman and Commissioner of the Indian Premier League and Vice-President of the BCCI.

The competition was launched in 2008 as a reply to the success of nationwide Twenty20 domestic cricket leagues, most particularly the Indian Premier League. The first version was situate to take place from late September to early October 2008 in India, after the tournament organizers resolute various teething problems that have put the inaugural tournament under some uncertainty, but it was later on announced that the tournament would be held from December 3 to December 10, 2008.

The tournament was delayed due to terrorist attacks in Mumbai in November 2008 and soon after cancelled, with the primary tournament now scheduled for October 2009. Indian mobile service Bharti Airtel have bought the title sponsorship rights of the champions league for the report amount of rupees 170 crores.

The Champions League was prolonged from eight to 12 teams, and will contain the familial Twenty20 winner of West Indies, Sri Lanka and New Zealand, at the same time Delhi Daredevils, who top the round-robin phase of the 2009 IPL. The inaugural Champions Twenty20 League will be start from October 8-23 in India, just after the Champions Trophy. The prize money for the competition will be US$ 6 million, and the sketch will be held in London on June 23 after which the venues will be finalised.

Delhi Daredevils will be tied by Deccan Chargers and Royal Challengers Bangalore, the 2009 IPL finalists. Other 2009 domestic finalists and winners include: Victoria and New South Wales from Australia, Cape Cobras and Eagles from South Africa, Otago from New Zealand, Trinidad and Tobago from West Indies and Wayamba from Sri Lanka. England's Twenty20 Cup finalists will only be resolute on August 25 2009. Sialkot Stallions, the winners of Pakistan's domestic Twenty20 tournament, will not feature beacuse of restrictions by the Pakistan Government.

In the primary stage there will be a total of 23 matches and the teams will be separated into four groups of three each to play on a league basis. The top two teams from each group go to the second stage. The four top teams from there will play the semi-finals

  1. This is YOUSAF from Pakistan and i had a query about the teams included in this particular tournament. Having the rivalry between the two countries in a cricket ground i.e the country that is hosting this champions league and the country where i am from, it should have been more interesting if Sialkot Stallions should have played in this tournament. I think this is a bad show from the Indian board and ICC. Very shameful.
